“Add a pinch to your favourite smoothie recipe” is a phrase that gets tossed around ginseng use a lot. But what if you haven’t yet entered the realm of the hardcore juicers or smoothie makers? This was me when I first married Remi. The only smoothies I had consumed regularly were the ones I bought while working as a flight attendant in the airport between flights (note: if I had known about ginseng back then I would have tossed some ginseng powder right in my large Jugo Juice).
Remi introduced me to this yummy and easy smoothie—now known as Remi’s Farm Life Smoothie—when we were first married. Since I wasn’t in the habit of getting up with the rooster, he would leave this smoothie on my bedside table before he left to tend the fields and I would leisurely drink it as I started my day. Those days are gone now that we have small children, but every time I sip this old favourite recipe, I’m reminded of the sweet early days of my life as a farmer’s wife.
Serves 2
Ingredients:
1 frozen banana
A large handful of baby kale or spinach
½ cup frozen berries
1 cup Canadian milk or milk alternative (I love almond milk!)
1 tsp ginseng powder*
A few ice cubes
Instructions:
Add ingredients to your blender and blend thoroughly.
Taste and adjust ingredients as needed. For example, if it’s not quite sweet enough you can add a teaspoon of local honey. If it’s too thick for your taste, add another splash of milk or more ice cubes.
Enjoy!
*Ginseng powder is most readily available from the dried root. This root has been thoroughly cleaned (and yes, cleanliness falls under government inspection) and is ready-to-use. Cut off the needed amount and whirl it through the blender until it’s powdery.
